Tom Haines has become the 148th Sussex player to be awarded his county cap.
He was presented with his cap by Championship and One-Day Head Coach Ian Salisbury during the tea interval of day three of the LV= Insurance County Championship match against Derbyshire at The 1st Central County Ground.
Commenting on the decision to award Haines his Sussex cap, Performance Director Keith Greenfield said: “Tom has enjoyed a truly remarkable summer. His performances speak for themselves, but this county cap also recognises how he has lived the values of our club. His work ethic, his commitment to his teammates and his leadership in the face of challenging circumstances make him fully deserving of this honour.”
Salisbury added: “As a homegrown player desperate to bring sustained success to Sussex, Tom embodies everything we’re trying to achieve at the club. The way Tom has transformed his approach, the runs that has brought him this season, his emergence as a leader in our dressing room and his buy in to our plan make him fully deserving of this accolade.”
Tom’s 1,176 runs this season make him the leading run-scorer in the Championship. He was the first batter to reach the landmark of 1,000 runs this summer and has twice recorded career-best scores, most recently with his innings of 156 against Middlesex earlier this month. That was the fifth first-class centruy of Tom's career. He also scored a maiden one-day century against the same opposition in August.
